Having issues with the foundation of your house could mean there’s a problem with the stumps that make up the foundation. In many cases foundations are made of concrete slabs and so issues with those won’t be a stump problem. But quite a lot of houses also have foundations made of stumps, both wooden stumps and concrete. These stumps can deteriorate due to natural wear and tear from the house being used as well as factors such as mould and rot. Damage to any stump would cause structural damage and this loss of structural integrity could then cause sloping of the house.
To determine if there’s a major issue the inspection process is pretty important. Floors can become sloped due to a variety of reasons but the foundation is probably the blame in most cases. However, not every case of slope is due to a problem with the stumps and restumping is also not needed every time there is visible sloping. This is because the range of slope that is visible is not equal to the range of sloping that is unacceptable. Floors can slope and still be structurally sound. Though the decision of living with a sloping floor might mean having restumping done anyway if the sloped floor is just too awkward to live on. Skipping the restumping process if it isn’t needed really emphasizes the importance of the inspection process since assuming sloping means work must be done is both inaccurate and possibly expensive. |
