Restumping is not a topic a lot of people think about. This is probably because a lot of people never see the foundation of their house and so never think about it. Out of sight is out of mind, as the cliche goes. However, the foundation of a house is quite important and if most people do take the time to think about it they would certainly agree about its importance. Another reason it doesn’t come to mind is because it isn’t possible for many people since they have a foundation made of a concrete slab. But for the many home owners who have concrete or wood stumps as their sub-floor foundation, then it is a topic that should be thought about.

Foundations are pretty important as previously noted and so the repairs to the foundation should be expertly done. No matter how good the initial work is, the natural wear and tear caused by the house being in use can cause the house to no longer be level and slope a bit. When this happens it is only natural to want the house to be realigned so it’s all back to level ground. However, by not picking the right restumping specialists there’s a risk that more damage could be done. This is where we, the experts, come in.

Depending on where the house is, restumping may be needed sooner. A house on the coast would need it done faster than one in the drier suburbs. This is because the salt air is filled with moisture and so helps mould to grow which then can cause damage to the stumps. The presence of mould can even cause rot which could cause breakage and so, eventually, sagging. Even further away from the coast, wood and concrete stumps may begin to sink into the ground and rot is still possible away from the moist air even if it may take a longer time to set in. These are only some of the reasons why reblocking may be necessary even in well-built foundations. No matter the quality of the initial work, the conditions houses face really make work being done inevitable.
Wanting the house back to level isn’t the only reason to have reblocking done. While this might be the main reason from an aesthetic point of view, the fact of the matter is not having it done can be quite dangerous as a home that is tilting or sinking is no longer structurally sound. By leaving the home to continue in this manner could cause all kinds of associated problems to also arise. We understand that the cost of reblocking might be something that makes the idea one you may want to stay away from. But this would be a mistake. Replacing the stumps in the subfloor is not an especially expensive process if you have experts on hand. And furthermore, leaving the subfloor to sag or tilt can make it more expensive to fix in the long run since there’ll be other problems to fix too.
